Where the wild things are

A Guide to the Isle of Mull for Sidetracked Equipped, Oct 22.

Photography by Rachel Keenan

The Isle of Mull is a small but mighty island off the west coast of Scotland with an abundance in nature. In this guide Rachel Keenan, a Scottish outdoor photographer, highlights aspects of the island not to be missed.

Just off the west coast of Scotland, a ferry ride from Oban, lies the fourth-largest island in the United Kingdom. Isolated from the mainland, the Isle of Mull encapsulates the vast landscapes often associated with Scottish terrain. Upland valleys are split by freshwater rivers, meandering through the moorlands, trickling effortlessly until reaching the cliffs and shores. Ethereal mountains, iconic lochs, white sand beaches, and miles of tracks for cycling around the gnarled coastline; there are endless opportunities for exploring the island, and with Scotland’s right to roam act, everyone is ensured the freedom of wild places.

Quiet and humble, yet wildly energetic, the Inner Hebridean island hosts a diverse array of wildlife. From coastally adapted Eurasian otters – a naturally freshwater species – to the reintroduced white-tailed sea eagles that nest in the conifers, this mighty island is a haven for those seeking biodiversity in their adventures.
